On Tuesday, Wizards of the Coast announced Sponsored Invitations to Pro Tour Gatecrash. Additionally, five other invitations were offered under the category of “Special” Invitations. As the Magic community often does, a few jokes were bandied about and then a few folk began to question why exactly these invites were issued. With these questions came an Onslaught of complaints, condemnations, and criticism. While Aaron Forsythe and Helene Bergeot tried to offer a few explanations, the conversation quickly ran in too many directions to be manageable. Thankfully, the other Magic denizens of Twitter largely managed to pass the collective bickering on to a few more vocal participants and went back to cracking jokes.
Me and @dieplstks are trying to crack the code on these Special Invites. We have (possibly) legit reasons for 3/5. Big q: WHO IS DADO?!— ya boy psamms (@psamms) January 8, 2013
Sponsor's Exemptions are performance-based and come with plane tickets. Special Invites are for a variety of random reasons, no ticket.— Aaron Forsythe (@mtgaaron) January 8, 2013

Sponsor's Exemptions for #PTGTC have been awarded to the non Qd players who posted the best results last season (GP, PTQ and PT RTR),— Helene Bergeot (@HeleneBergeot) January 8, 2013
@dieplstks You can't invite a website to the PT. That's silly.— Chris Allen (@psychicbattle) January 8, 2013
I actually really like the invites for the people who got them before but couldn't go for a (strong) outside reason— Paulo Vitor (@PVDDR) January 8, 2013
@PVDDR It is totally subjective. Why does that matter if it is a one time thing?— Brian David-Marshall (@Top8Games) January 8, 2013
not sure how i feel about all the special invitations but at least its gonna be a fun night reading twitter.— Martin Jůza (@MartinJuza) January 8, 2013
I think PT invites should be like Highlander, they have a limited # based on region and you have to decapitate people to get 1. #TheFuture— Nina Illingworth (@CardboardWitch) January 8, 2013
For every special invite given out, WoTC kills one qualified player. I mean, I guess I can see why that bothers some people... #crackingeggs— Justin Treadway (@GriffnValentine) January 8, 2013
