It is the most wonderful time of the year again: Special Invite Time! I just love to see what Twitter has to say about the Special and Sponsors’ Invites. This time around, Sean Plott (@day9tv) of Star Craft 2 fame received an invite that more than a few folk weren’t too terribly happy about. Apparently, many amongst you felt that playing in one Grand Prix and having a huge fan base wasn’t enough to qualify someone for the Pro Tour. To me, it said “Sam, get more followers.”
As with all Organize Play controversies, eventually the debate swirled around the concept of “fairness.” Mr. PV “Dance Dance Revolution” was characteristically at the heart of it all, arguing a multitude of points about fairness. At the end of the day, it’s Wizard’s show and we’re all along for the ride. Does this system bother you, or are you rooting for day9 to crush the PT?
It’s actually mind blowing to me that people who care about Magic and have competed on the highest level could be against Sponsor’s Invites.

For someone that puts an actual face to the game, I second this. “@cspranklerun: AM I NOT SPECIAL ENOUGH FOR YOUR SPECIAL INVITES?!?!!”

@meddlingmage Great idea, but PTQ attendance would be through the roof and it’s already dangerously high

Congrats @day9tv for being invited to the next Mtg Pro Tour!!!!!! At least there will be one Gosu there.

Did wizards invite Sean because they really see potential in him, or just want to use him to grab his SC2 fan base? :/

I kinda sorta maybe possibly don’t agree with one of the people who received a special invite for PT Dragon’s Maze.#guesswho

@fenaris What is day9?

@kyle2plowshares While I don’t disagree, I do think all invites should be special. Exemptions still seem somewhat arbitrarily awarded.

@fffreakmtg I think you just said the EXACT reason some are complaining.

@pvddr Sponsor’s Exemptions are there to fill gaps for people who come within a match of PT two or more times who can’t rating in anymore.

@pvddr Alright, I Like what wizards is doing. The SI and SE are great. I dont feel that plat or gold pros should compare themselves to them
