I decided it was finally time to get a guest on the stream to copilot a deck with me. When looking over a laundry list of potential people to play the role of Chewbacca, one stood out above the rest; Rudy @Itssobza. He brings with him a refreshingly fun energy to anything he does and I expected that to help make the stream even more entertaining.
Rudy also happens to be pretty good at Magic. He’s won a SCG Standard open, top 16’d multiple Legacy Opens and even top 16’d a Grand Prix. He likes to think of himself as a Legacy aficionado and when I contacted him about being on stream it was obviously the format he wanted to play.
I was more than happy to oblige. I love Legacy. The format is extremely diverse and a lot of fun to play, even when losing simply because you get to see so many different types of decks. Rudy is known for his prowess with the Deathblade archetype so that’s what we went to battle with.
Legacy Esper Deathblade aka Its So BZA-blade
Instead of just jumping into 2man queues and waiting forever to get a match we were fortunate enough to have some higher profile Legacy community members, such as Jarvis Yu, available to challenge us to some games. We got to play four total matches. Unfortunately our only win was against Elves in our second match. We had a rough first match against Junk Maverick. Mother of Runes in multiples is very hard to beat. We also lost to storm, likely because game 1 we (read: Rudy) didn’t think our opponent would have Burning Wish. Whoops!
For the 4th match we played against UWr Miracles at the hands of Jarvis Yu. Unfortunately Rudy had to leave after a long grindy game one where we misplayed a turn to let our opponent win at 1 life. In game 2 I was playing terribly due to my unfamiliarity with the Deathblade deck. After that demoralizing fact I decided to call it quits for the night.
The deck is definitely powerful, but relies a little too heavily on Deathrite Shaman for my taste. There is an argument to be made for Deathrite being the most powerful creature in Legacy, but I don’t want to be using him as a crutch. I feel that the BUG Delver list is more my speed as I have a lot of experience playing the tempo-style game from RUG Delver.
Next week I’ll be playing Modern with a spicy deck and a secret special guest. Come visit us on Tuesday to see who it is and what we’re playing with at 8:30pm EST over at http://www.twitch.tv/legitmtg.
