We were up until the wee hours of the night debating and championing our favorite brew from this week’s Commander challenge. In case you missed this week’s Commander extravaganza, here are the Champions chosen to represent their judge in the Maze:
Judge: Heather Lafferty
Winners: Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts by Tyler Priemer and Melek, Izzet Paragon by Michael Robles
Judge: Scott MacCallum
Winner: Vorel of the Hull Clade by Sean Patchen
Runners-up: Lavinia of the Tenth by Hirwaz Despommes and Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts by Uriah Oxford
Judge: Cassidy McAuliffe
Winner: Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts by Ryan Nightingale
Runner-up: Varolz, the Scar-Striped by Larry Rivera
Judge: Jonathan Medina
Winner: Melek, Izzet Paragon by Jon Johnson
Runner-up: Tajic, Blade of the Legion by Taz Scott
Any of the winners or runner-up decks listed in our judge articles were avaliable to be voted on as the Champion of the Maze. We debated, gnashed our teeth, and pulled our hair, then cast our votes. In anticipation we might have a tie (with an even number of judges), I enlisted the help of longtime Legiter and my partner in crime @Justin_dz to be the tie breaker. As it turned out you can’t get an Angel, Assassian, Brute, and Law Man to agree on anything. We had four different votes.
The votes went as follows:
Heather: Lavinia of the Tenth by Hirwaz Despommes
Scotty: Varolz, the Scar-Striped by Larry Rivera
Cassidy: Melek, Izzet Paragon by Michael Robles
Jonathan: Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts by Ryan Nightingale
Time for a tiebreaker
@RevisedAngel: Of all the winners and runner-ups this week, which was your overall favorite?
@Justin-Dz: I like “RUNNER-UP: VAROLZ, THE SCAR-STRIPED BY LARRY RIVERA” the best. I had a similar Golgari EDH deck and it was pretty fun and dynamic. This one’s a little douchey for my tastes, but is full of cards I like to play.
@RevisedAngel: What makes a deck “a little douchey”?
@Justin_Dz: It has a few super-broken cards and infinite combos. Like, if you get Mikaeus and Triskelion out, you win. Which also means that if you resolve Tooth and Nail, you win. That tends to ruin otherwise fun and dynamic games. But the rest of it is pretty cool.
@RevisedAngel: What did you think of Tyler’s Teysa deck?
@Justing_Dz: Pretty good. I don’t like BW personally and haven’t played it, so I don’t know what makes it tick. But this clearly wasn’t about making anything tick. They need to make a combat trick called “Tiger Blood” so the Heidi Fleiss thing can include a more solid Charlie Sheen reference.
@RevisedAngel: What about the Lavinia deck runner-up that was submitted to Scotty?
@Justin_Dz: Probably pretty good. It has a lot of similarities to my current UG commander deck. Value creatures that you blink over and over for even more value.
@RevisedAngel: What did you think of the Melek brews?
@Justin_Dz: I’m anti-UR.
@RevisedAngel: What? Why?
@Justin_Dz: I disliked them all on principle. I don’t like the color combo. And most of the decks are pretty un-fun to play against. Draw 1,000 cards, destroy all your stuff, take infinite turns. Whee.
So there we have it. Our Champion of the Maze and winner of $50 Legit MTG credit is:
Varolz, the Scar-Striped by Larry Rivera
