Draft with Josh #3

Written by Joshua Claytor on . Posted in Competitive Magic, Limited

After winning the previous two drafts I showcased here on Legitmtg.com (if you want to call your finals opponent timing out winning!) I was feeling on top of the world! I was not staying married to my first pick, and getting a grasp of the signals that were being passed to me, I felt as if I was progressing as a Limited mage. I felt as if it were time for me to move up to an 8-4.

You see I play on a budget. I might spend 100 a week on MTGO, and that is if I am winning a lot. Other weeks I am on a strict one draft a week limitation. To me, an 8-4 is a high risk event when I am playing with such a small portion of my pay. I like to cut my teeth on the format in Swiss drafts or 4322 queues, because I just do not have the confidence in my play skill that I did say ten years ago. I’ve gotten older, my mind has gotten slower and with MTGO up and running (when it does not crash events) other grinders have surpassed me. It gives me great hope whenever I see the ages of some people in the top eight of Grand Prix events. I’m 33, and seeing players like Levy (32), LSV (31), Parke (32), Martell (31), Jensen (31), Stark (30), Cuneo (38), Black (31), Wescoe (30) and others who are of a similar age do well makes me want to push harder, and back down with the excuse that Magic is a young persons game. They can do it, why can’t I? (Other than every person I listed is a highly talented mage.)

I really want to get back on the tour, at least one more time, and MTGO is the best tool that I have at my disposal to do that. I am starting to cash out my credits here at Legit for boxes so I can practice drafting with my friends, so I will hopefully get a bit better with more drafts under my belt.

Speaking of drafts under my belt, I finally felt comfortable enough to enter an 8-4 on MTGO. I guess I took a lot of words to say that. Let’s take a look at the draft and see what went right and wrong here!

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

I was not impressed with this pack.  I almost went with the Chromanticore because I thought it would be the most fun, but settled in with the green card that I know pretty well.  I struggled with the pick here because in my mind there was no clear cut pick in the pack, and I just went with what I was most comfortable with.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

Bolt of Keranos is one of my most drafted cards in the set, and something I am happy to grab.  Again I felt as if this pack was weak as well, but did not struggle with it as much as I did with pack one.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

I know that Sudden Storm is a very strong card.  I think that may have been the more correct pick.  The Centaur may have been better than this as well, but for some reason I was entertaining the thoughts of Chromanticore still.

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

I think after the last pack I saw some playable blue and thought I might want to get on that.  I’m not sure if there is a card in this pack that I wanted for the deck I ended up in.

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

I was interested in the Minotaur archetype, and figured this was a good signal to it being open.  From this point I tried to make Minotaurs a focus of future packs.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

I’m not sure what I am doing here, and this guy is kinda playable.  I’m not sure what colors I am in yet, but it’s a nice cheap heroic enabler if I need one.

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

The Archetype and Triton were both better picks here.

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

Stormcaller of Keranos is what I think I should have taken, but I took the Minotaur here.

Pack 1 pick 9:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 10:

My Pick:

Super aggressive Minotaur!  He plays well with the tribe at least?

Pack 1 pick 11:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 12:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 13:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 14:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 15:

My Pick:

Pack one was weird.  I may have missed out on the blue signal, that I thought was strong at the time, to go with a Minotaur themed deck.  I’m not really married to anything specific, and would be comfortable switching colors, I knew red was gonna be one of my colors, but I was not too sold on black.  I also do not think I passed anything super solid for RW heroic in this pack, and ended up with some key guys for it if I tried to go that route.

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

Heliod seemed like the best card.  Like I said I was not firmly in black, at least not after one pack and this guy would give me a chance to switch colors.  I’m fine with Red White overall, and after my initial threats are dealt with this guy would give me a measure of inevitability.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

Against nothing in Black or Red for me to be super excited about, and I hear that this guy is really good.

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

Here I was thinking the RW Heroic deck may have been coming together for me, but the Alseid was another card I considered.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

A solid two drop that helps my creatures get through?  Okay!

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

Seemed like the best choice between it and the Cyclops.

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

This was the wrong pick.  Coordinated Assault or Titan’s Strength is where I should have been in this pack.  I did not really have the humans to take advantage of it, and really I did not want a six drop in Red White if that is where I went.

Pack 2 pick 7:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 8:

My Pick:

Probably should have taken the Raider here.  I may or may not have been drunk on Titan of Eternal Fire, and yes I have noticed that white has dried up.

Pack 2 pick 9:

My Pick:

Solid Minotaur!

Pack 2 pick 10:

My Pick:

Not a terrible guy to have in RW, but not the best either.

Pack 2 pick 11:

My Pick:

I think I should have taken Portent of Betrayal here.

Pack 2 pick 12:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 13:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 14:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 15:

My Pick:

After pack two I am confused.  I’m not sure if I am going to try to go white to support the bombs, or go black to flesh out the rest of the deck.  I was unable to make a decision, and while I was positive that black was the color to go due to white drying up, I was open to still making an heroic effort to drafting the aggro deck.

Pack 3 pick 1:

My Pick:

Nothing fancy, just a solid enchantment creature.  Always happy to have this Emissary.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

The removal was nice, but I think Read the Bones would have been better, nice to have card draw in Limited.

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

I was between Gray Merchant and Spearpoint for a while, I think the Merchant was the correct pick here.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

Really wishing I has taken the Assault or the Strength now.

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

I took the color shifted Hurloon Minotaur.

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

I probably overvalue Rage, but I am not sure if the Cyclops is better than it or not.

Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 10:

My Pick:

Am always happy to pick this card up.  I love Act of Treason effects!

Pack 3 pick 11:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 12:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 13:

So I ended up Black Red, but I do not think I made too many wrong choices.  Like what was I going to take over Heliod or Hundred-Handed One?  I think I saw that white was drying up in time, but I think I missed the signal that blue was open.  I was okay with the deck.  I did not think it was a world beater, but I did not immediately decide that this draft was a waste of my time.

Let’s take a look at what I played.

Here is the video of the draft and my deckbuild. Anything you all disagree with during the build?

Finally here is my first round of play with the deck. I kinda liked my deck, but I believe my opponent’s deck was just superior to mine.

Did I make any incorrect plays? Should have sent in the haste guy as soon as he was tapped out? Was waiting to cast him while I case other minotaurs right?

I went 0-1, and that happens, as long as I learn something from it, I’ll be okay with this performance. Help me out!
