Compulsive Research: Drafting with a God

Compulsive Research 700x235
Hi Everybody! I’m back this week with another stream, but this time, I wanted to bring you something completely different. The Pro Tour is around the corner, and Theros Limited is the PTQ format right now for PT Born Of The Gods. I couldn’t just leave you all hanging without some discussion on this valuable and exciting format, so I had to do a draft for you on stream. I obviously am nobody to learn about limited magic from, so I enlisted the help of a fellow streamer to get it done. I was graced by the presence of Limited God himself, Kenji Egashira, or as you all should know him by now, @NumotTheNummy. Kenji had just recently completed a 24 hour stream session in which he ran all kinds of cube drafts until he could no longer remain awake. He was celebrating his new lot in life, where he now is occupationally a streamer. That’s right, he quit his job to do nothing but provide MTG content for all of you. How could I ask anyone else to guide me through this foray into Theros Limited?

Kenji and I spent the first part of the show looking over the Theros Color Pairs article which was written by Sam Stoddard over on DailyMTG. If you haven’t read it, you should. It gives everyone a rudimentary understanding of the color pairs present in Theros, and what cards and strategies will give you the best edge in pursuing the pairing. I personally found it very informative and validating of some of my own theories about the format. If you are listeners of The Eh Team Podcast, then you will know already that it seems like the most preferred archetype from most of the people I have spoken with is Blue/Green. Kenji is of course part of this school of thought as well. Green has some of the best creatures available in the game, and as always, the Blue cards offer superior selection, and unconditional tempo based removal. The beef from the Flying Team is also not to be understated. Vaporkin is consistently over performing in every Limited Deck that I play, and Voyage’s End is often just the biggest blowout imaginable. Combine that with some Nessian Coursers and Nessian Asp in Green and you have a really sweet deck.

With all this knowledge in front of us, it was time to get into a draft. We joined an 8-4, and hoped that the run goods would see us through. Maybe we would open an Elspeth, maybe even a GOD. Here is the show. I hope you enjoy it.

I ended up really getting punished for my click through in the last game, as not suffering the blowout would have put us firmly in the driver’s seat. (despite my opponent’s clear opinion to the contrary) MTGO is a cruel mistress sometimes. Overall, I had a lot of fun with the format. I have been really enjoying my sealed experiences also. I encourage you all to at least give it a shot when you can, even if it’s just a draft at FNM. I will be equipped with a deck from the Pro Tour tonight, so make sure you tune in!! Congratulations to the two winners from last week. I gave away a Thoughtseize and a FOIL Medomai, The Ageless. What will we be giving away this week? Only one way to find out. Tune in, and tell your friends. Once we hit 100 viewers, and every threshold of 50 thereafter, I will be giving away prizes. It’s really that simple. twitch.tv/legitmtg It’s where the Magic happens. See you tonight at 930PM EST!
