After the many rounds of ranching we received last week at the hands of mono red in the RTR Block Constructed Daily, I knew I needed a deck to soothe the burns that I was still feeling even a few days afterwards. This likely led to a Trostani deck with Populate, or something like that. Unfortunately, that deck has a pretty tough time beating the Esper decks currently, and god forbid you see an opposing Boros Reckoner. I needed a 75 that was going to serve me really well against both the aggressive strategies, while not simply giving up the ship to a good control deck. Thankfully, I didn’t have to look very far, as there was a deck that fit this very bill already seeing success.
RTR Block Junk
Now THIS was something I could get behind. This is a true 75 card deck, geared to prey equally on aggressive strategies and the control decks of the format over the course of 3 games. It has all of the life gain it needs combined with effective removal, resilient threats, and big bombs for the aggressive matches. In a control match though, this deck can make countermagic a losing proposition very quickly with Abrupt Decay, Loxodon Smiter and Voice of Resurgence, but then adds a disruptive element post board of Sin Collector to really nail the coffin shut. I took this through the RTR Block Daily, and of course captured it here for you:
This deck performed really well, and were it not for the Naya deck crushing us by going bigger while we suffered on tempo, we may very well have taken the event down. It seems also that perhaps this combination of cards may very well be a good foil to the RTR Block metagame as it has traditionally defined. If you don’t believe me, then I invite you to check the results of a recent RTR Block Premier Event, here: http://www.wizards.com/magic/Digital/MagicOnlineTourn.aspx?x=mtg/digital/magiconline/tourn/5969569
After playing in the Theros Prerelease, I am really looking forward to playing a lot more of the limited format. GP Toronto is coming up, so we may just be playing some limited after Theros becomes MTGO Legal. In the meantime, I have a special treat lined up for TUESDAY this week. I’m returning to Modern for next week!! GP Detroit Top 4 competitor, Ben Moir will be co-piloting us through some Modern queues with his updated 4 color Ajundi list, this time, with more CHANDRA. 930pm EST start time, you know where to be. Also, the following week will very likely be a last standard run with an old favorite before rotation. Fun things in store here at LegitMTG. Don’t miss it!!
