20 Tweets: Magic and Misogyny
Normally I would be covering one of my favorite events: pre-release. It’s everything I love about Magic. You crack packs, play with new cards and get excited about what changes are in store. While searching the tweets for stories of victory and defeat, I came across a conversation that I couldn’t overlook even on pre-release weekend. Women in gaming has been a hot button topic recently–especially with the backlash and harassment towards Anita Sarkeesian. I have been lucky during my years of gaming to only encounter a few real “charmers.” Some of my other girl gamer friends have not been so lucky. This issue surfaced again when Brian Kibler tweeted a photo of a girl at his pre-release. He was immediately bombarded with sexual comments about the girl in the photo. Much ado about nothing or an issue in need of fixing?

@zdch @dieplstks @bmkibler what the fuck is wrong with *some* people? Many of us have no problem being polite and respectful to women.

@dieplstks @bmkibler my wife always says my friends will never have a woman. They all act like that.

The next time you think "not all male gamers are bad, what about *my* two awesome friends!", feel free to keep it to yourself.

@geordie_tait Because it's way better to say "all" than you know, be truthful/accurate.

@trulyaliem @geordie_tait @fellwolf If you're actually an asshole, you probably don't care that you are one, generally *shrug*

@trulyaliem @geordie_tait @fellwolf Would be happy w/ cool people just getting up the nerve to call them out and shun them so they be quiet.

@polishtamales @mtgmedina @geordie_tait Dear Geordie Tait. I'd rather have those people in the community than you. Sincerely, Fuck Off.
— Bill Adamson (@Tzeriel) July 8, 2012
@geordie_tait I view it as sad when people choose to miss out on something just because everyone tells them how terrible all the people are.
— Kim Warren (@Fellwolf) July 7, 2012
@acadapt It's better than fine. It's a call to action and far more accurate than implying misogyny comes from small subset of community.
— Geordie Tait (@Geordie_Tait) July 7, 2012
@geordie_tait @fellwolf You can be 100% right - and you are - and still be off-putting in how you say what you say.
— Alli Medwin (@trulyaliem) July 7, 2012
@dieplstks @zdch @bmkibler Ugh. this is why I'm really careful about choosing where I play.
— Liz Cady (@JhoiraArtificer) July 7, 2012
@asmallx @dieplstks @bmkibler Pretty girl + Magic players = lewd comments :( It's pretty pathetic.

@lee_sharpe @dieplstks @bmkibler Magic players are the classiest. Almost as classy as fighting game players.
— Alli Medwin (@trulyaliem) July 7, 2012
@dieplstks And we wonder why gamers get a bad reputation?
— Dave Astels (@dastels_mtg) July 7, 2012

@mtgmedina @geordie_tait people like these keep my girlfriend from playing outside the condo. And to think I was going to that event today.
