Drafting with Joshua #1

Written by LegitMTG Staff on . Posted in Competitive Magic, Limited

I’m not the greatest drafter in the world.  When I sit down for a draft no one is going to mistake me for Ben Stark, Neil Reeves or Rich Hoaen.  Those players are world class competitors, and I’m a guy that got lucky at the right time once to get on the Pro Tour.  Limited has been the weakest part of my game for some time, as I have long thought of myself as a Constructed specialist.  However with Born of the Gods finally on MTGO, and the recent Pro Tour coming to a conclusion, a spark was lit and I had to crack some virtual booster packs!

I did not record the games played, but I am going to spoil it for you.  I went 3-0 winning the draft, some packs and a QP or two.  I want to present this draft and decklist because I want to see how others would have done it.  I want to see as many opinions and thoughts as possible, because I truly want to grow as a drafter.

It helps that in my time as Content Manager here at LegitMTG.com that I have noticed a lack of draft articles!

We should go ahead and take a look at the draft.  I’ll leave my thoughts when possible underneath the card that I picked.

Pack 1 pick 1:

My Pick:

From what I understand Red got a serious boost in the new set.  I think the Tribute mechanic is a skill testing one, and had yet to play it.  What better way to be introduced to the mechanic than on a splashy mythic rare like Flame-Wreathed Phoenix?  I’m pretty happy to play a 3/3 flyer for 4.  On that note, Tribute was always paid.

Pack 1 pick 2:

My Pick:

Raised by Wolves was my pick here.  I did not want to be married to the Phoenix, but also really like the Red Green combination while I am drafting.  This card is essentially a 4/4 for 5 mana, but can trigger Heroic.  It’s just fine without the trigger, and I was happy to add this to my pile.

Pack 1 pick 3:

My Pick:

I see this guy as a 6/6 for 5.  Tribute was always paid for him as well!  You could argue for the Raiders here, in the long game the inspired Centaur maker seems to be better, but I wanted to end my curve at five if at all possible!

Pack 1 pick 4:

My Pick:

I took the Rise to the Challenge as an heroic enabler.   I really like the Oathsworn as well, so for me it was a harder choice.  What would you have taken?

Pack 1 pick 5:

My Pick:

I took the Raiders this time, but I think I made the wrong pick here.  I think my thought process was I was lacking a true heroic theme, and needed beef, but Mischief and Mayhem I think would have sent a stronger signal in regards to green.  Pharagax Giant may have been the best pick as I really did not want to go above 5, and he’s pretty much a 5/5 for 5.

Pack 1 pick 6:

My Pick:

Snake of the Golden Grove and Reckless Reveler were both better picks than the Satyr that I ended up with.

Pack 1 pick 7:

My Pick:

I took the best green card in the pack I think.   Charging Badger could make an argument for that but he just did not care.

Pack 1 pick 8:

My Pick:

I was very happy to get this quality piece of removal for my deck. It feels weird to say that about a functional reprint of Deglamer

Pack 1 pick 9:

My Pick:

I was watching NumottheNummy stream while the prereleases were going on and he was very high on the Starbreaker.  I figured it was worth a shot to try out!

Pack 1 pick 10:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 11:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 12:

My Pick:

Oh hey, I got the Oathsworn as well.  That was nice of the pack!

Pack 1 pick 13:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 14:

My Pick:

Pack 1 pick 15:

My Pick:

Pretty happy with pack one.  I am solidly in Red Green, have a really good flyer, a few pieces of removal and some solid beaters.  I may have made two incorrect picks here, but I think I was able to overcome those.

Pack 2 pick 1:

My Pick:

Sometimes you open up two Mythics.  This is one of those times.  Has Polukranos not been in the pack I would have taken Rage of Purphoros.

Pack 2 pick 2:

My Pick:

I’ll gladly take the removal spell here.

Pack 2 pick 3:

My Pick:

If i were super aggressive I would have taken the Crusader.  The Revelry almost made it in to my draft pile but in the end I went with the nicely costed Bestow guy, clinging to a bit of hope that I could get some of the great midrange green heroic creatures.

Pack 2 pick 4:

My Pick:

Good Moat in the one drop slot.  I’ve played this guy enough to know that he really complicates combat for my opponent.

Pack 2 pick 5:

My Pick:

The Battlemaster made my pile as soon as the pack loaded up on my screen.  He is silly good in my mind.  I was not too happy to pass a Fade into Antiquity but I was sure I would get another later on in the packs.

Pack 2 pick 6:

My Pick:

Speaking off, I took this over a second Sedge Scorpion.  I like the little guy, but I like dealing with gods a lot better.

Pack 2 pick 7:

My Pick:

Don’t care what the fox says.  Do care that he turns sideways and tramples over dorks.  Savage Surge may have been the better pick here.

Pack 2 pick 8:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 9:

My Pick:

Nice two drop, pleased to have it in my pile as well.  Unknown Shores made me pause, but this far in to the draft I was not concerned with potential mana issues.

Pack 2 pick 10:

My Pick:

At this point  I was heavier in green than red, and the Disciple would allow me to crawl back into a game or give me a nice comfortable buffer as I tried to take over.

Pack 2 pick 11:

My Pick:

Another piece of removal and something that I was happy to have.

Pack 2 pick 12:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 13:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 14:

My Pick:

Pack 2 pick 15:

My Pick:

At the end of pack two I am very happy with the direction of my draft.  I have two stupid bombs an embarrassment of riches in regards to the ever important enchantment removal, and some really solid creatures.  Moving on to pack three!

Pack 3 pick 1:

My Pick:

With the previous two packs I was honestly surprised that I did not open Xenagos the Reveler.  Talk about greedy!  I took the Spark Jolt because I wanted to be able to smooth my draws out.

Pack 3 pick 2:

My Pick:

A guy with protection for enchantments!  Sure why not?

Pack 3 pick 3:

My Pick:

I wanted something that could help with heroic again.  The Disciple may have been the more correct pick here.

Pack 3 pick 4:

My Pick:

I had enough five drops and am in love with Magma Jet

Pack 3 pick 5:

My Pick:

Nothing in my mind fit here, so I took the removal spell.

Pack 3 pick 6:

My Pick:

Nylea’s Presence is a nice way to fix my mana in case it were to ever come up.  Flamespeaker Adept would have been a nice one had I had more scry!

Pack 3 pick 7:

My Pick:

Safety removal over the scorpion seems about right.  I may be undervaluing this card.

Pack 3 pick 8:

My Pick:

Took the guy that could block my Phoenix over the Rambler.

Pack 3 pick 9:

My Pick:

Seems like the best card and can double as a mana fixer and accelerant.

Pack 3 pick 10:

My Pick:

Unlikely to play it, but not disappointed to have it.

Pack 3 pick 11:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 12:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 13:

My Pick:

Pack 3 pick 14:

Pack 3 pick 15:

Here is the finished deck as I played it.

I really wanted to play the Spark Jolts, but I only had 13 creatures in the deck.   To me in just about any draft format that is really low.  Thankfully I had a ton of quality removal, and was able to stall the games long enough for my massive team to take over.

So this is it for the first installment of Drafting with Josh here on LegitMTG.com.  I do not think that I made a giant fool of myself here, but you all my disagree.  Let me know what you would have done differently in the comments section.  I am interested to hear what you all may have to say about this!
